At Scenic Heights Elementary, 3rd Grade Chinese Immersion Teacher Qingling Mendenhall has always focused on how to remove distractions to allow her students to perform their best.
She knows that helping kids slow down, settle, and turn inward to focus on their breathing is a great way to eliminate distractions and help them to be their best selves.
Qingling has used a few different visual and auditory tools and signals to help her students be mindful of their breathing and help them remove stress during the school day. She has been doing this with her students for the past few years, and has seen a great improvement in her students' abilities to settle down, focus, and avoid distractions at school.
Qingling received a school district Framework Grant to expand her mindfulness and deep breathing techniques to the other teachers at Scenic Heights. Each teacher was able to choose from a mindfulness chime or a Hoberman Sphere, which expands and contracts when manipulated. She offered a training to teachers to learn how to use the tools in her classroom. Now teachers across the building have another tool to help their students settle and focus on learning.
